Managing surface run-off in rural and urban areas

Origin Lab

Mykonos, Cyclades, Greece

Mykonos, Cyclades, Greece

Territory

Located in the Cyclades, Mykonos has a dry Mediterranean climate, limited freshwater resources and strong seasonal tourism. During peak periods, the island's population can double or triple, placing additional pressure on its water supply.

Water and environmental challenges

  • Limited freshwater availability and prolonged dry seasons.
  • Flash floods and surface runoff during intense rainfall.
  • Increased water demand caused by seasonal tourism.

Objectives

  • Capture rainwater and stormwater for local reuse.
  • Improve stormwater quality through natural treatment.
  • Support aquifer recharge and reduce pressure on freshwater resources.

Nature-Based Solutions

Solution 01

Rainwater harvesting and bioswale

Rainwater and surface runoff are collected from rooftops and residential areas, filtered through a vegetated bioswale and stored for later use.

Solution 02

Constructed wetland and aquifer recharge

A constructed wetland improves stormwater quality before its reuse for irrigation and other non-potable purposes, while excess water supports groundwater recharge.

Tunis, Tunisia

Territory

The Ksar Said Hippodrome retention basin is located in a densely urbanised area combining residential, industrial and institutional activities. The basin currently stores stormwater during heavy rainfall before discharging it without treatment or reuse.

Water and environmental challenges

  • Urban flooding and flash floods during intense rainfall.
  • Pollution from debris, organic contaminants and heavy metals.
  • Water scarcity and limited reuse of alternative water sources.

Objectives

  • Improve stormwater quality before it enters and leaves the basin.
  • Increase local infiltration and reduce flood pressure.
  • Enable the safe reuse of treated water.

Nature-Based Solutions

Solution 01

Vegetated infiltration basins

Vegetated areas within the retention basin will promote infiltration, improve soil permeability and naturally remove pollutants.

Solution 02

Constructed wetland treatment system

Pre-treatment structures and compact constructed wetlands will filter stormwater before discharge, creating opportunities for irrigation and green-space maintenance.
