Mediterranean Water Resilience Atlas
An extended, MED-specific catalogue of Nature-Based Solutions for water resilience
Overview
A catalogue built for Mediterranean realities
The Mediterranean Water Resilience Atlas (MWR Atlas), an extended, MED-specific catalogue of NBS (integrated within the SIRENA platform) focused on enhancing water resilience across Mediterranean socio-ecological contexts.
Building upon the structure and functionalities of the existing Natural Water Retention Measures (NWRM) database, the task will adapt and enrich this resource to reflect the unique climatic, ecological, and governance realities of South MED countries. The Atlas will include curated case studies from recent PRIMA, Horizon 2020, Horizon Europe, LIFE+ and Interreg projects relevant to water and NBS, emphasizing both implemented solutions and their documented impacts.
Each entry will comprise technical specifications, implementation contexts, effectiveness metrics, monitoring methodologies, and multi-functionality criteria - particularly in relation to water quality, availability, risk reduction, biodiversity, and socio-economic co-benefits. The Atlas will also incorporate policy relevance, showcasing enabling conditions, institutional frameworks, and regulatory gaps.
It will serve multiple functions across the project: feed into the optimisation and modelling activities, support the co-design and selection of NBS in demo sites, and inform impact assessments. It will also form part of the digital interface to ensure accessibility by stakeholders, practitioners, and policy-makers via the project's toolset.
