WaterMed Hubs
WaterMed Hubs
Local innovation for a water-resilient Mediterranean
The WaterMed Hubs bring together local stakeholders to co-develop, test and demonstrate Nature-Based Solutions in real-world conditions. Each hub addresses specific water challenges while contributing to shared learning across the Mediterranean.
Three regions, shared challenges, common solutions
From islands to agricultural plains and arid regions, the WaterMed Hubs cover diverse Mediterranean contexts to test and scale Nature-Based Solutions.

How Origin and Implementation Labs work together
Each WaterMed Hub pairs an Origin Lab, where solutions are generated and tested, with an Implementation Lab, where they are adapted and scaled in a new local context.
Origin Labs
Generate and test knowledge and solutions
- Local context and stakeholder mapping
- Input to Mediterranean Water Resilience Atlas
- Support for co-creation framework (testbeds)
- Training materials, guidelines and manuals
- Twinning exchanges and IL visits
- Testing of SIRENA Toolset in advanced testbeds
- Policy inputs from governance schemes
North-South Knowledge Flow
OLs: validated technical and operational know-how. ILs: adapt, expand and test scalability in different socio-geographical conditions.
Co-creation Feedback Loop
Cohesive stakeholder engagement frameworks shared and tested across WaterMed Hubs; generation of the SCoP and context-sensitive capacity building.
Policy and Governance Exchange
Shared experiences inform water-governance frameworks, local plans and future policy briefs.
Implementation Labs
Apply, adapt and scale solutions in local contexts
- Local context assessment and stakeholder mapping
- Adoption and localization of the co-creation framework
- Application of upscaling roadmap methodology with OL guidance
- Field implementation of NBS based on OL experiences
- Capacity building for local actors (adapted to local context)
- Use of the SIRENA Repository & Toolset for adaptive monitoring
- Feedback on policy & governance obstacles for future briefs
