SIRENA project

Overview

SIRENA brings together Nature-Based Solutions, digital innovation, local knowledge and policy action to support more resilient and sustainable water management across the Mediterranean.

A region under growing pressure

Context

A region under growing pressure

The Mediterranean faces increasing water-related challenges. Climate change, population growth, urbanisation and unsustainable resource use are putting pressure on water availability, ecosystems and the well-being of communities.

More resilient, integrated and inclusive approaches are needed to ensure water security for people and nature.

Our ambition

SIRENA aims to demonstrate how Nature-Based Solutions, supported by digital tools, local engagement and evidence-based policies, can strengthen water resilience and contribute to a more sustainable and climate-resilient Mediterranean region.

How we work

Our pillars

01

Nature-Based Solutions

Designing and implementing NBS at local scale to address water challenges and enhance ecosystem resilience.

02

Digital Innovation

Developing and using advanced digital tools and data platforms to monitor, evaluate and support decision-making.

03

Local Engagement

Strengthening the capacities of local actors and fostering participatory approaches for sustainable water management.

04

Policy Impact

Providing evidence and practical recommendations to inform policy and support the upscaling of successful solutions.

Creating lasting impact

From knowledge to action

Creating lasting impact

SIRENA is implemented across three WaterMed Hubs organised in six different countries, covering different Mediterranean environments and water-related challenges. This collaborative structure enables knowledge to flow between regions while adapting solutions to local environmental, social and governance contexts.

By connecting research, innovation, local experience and policy, SIRENA contributes to real-world Nature-Based Solutions for water security and a more resilient Mediterranean, today and for future generations.
